A Sendoff That Says Hello

A wedding exit isn’t the moment when newlyweds say a tearful farewell to their family and friends, but rather a celebratory hello to the next chapter of their life together. Not only is a send-off an opportunity for a breathtaking photo, but it’s also the last impression of the wedding that guests will take home with them—like sentimental party favors.
To help couples draw their festivities to a memorable close, Delaware Seaside Bride spoke with Melissa Forlenza, the owner and wedding coordinator at Belle of the Ball Weddings & Events, based in Maryland, about the send-offs trending in the Delmarva region.
While Melissa has noticed a predilection towards ceremony send-offs, she also intimates that couples can choose to feature both, suggesting items best appreciated in the sunlight for the recessional and items that illuminate for after the reception.
To liven up the ceremony with a hint of whimsy and nostalgic fun, a bubble send-off signifies an end to the formalities and a start to the celebration. Unlike the more specialized send-offs, these playful spheres are cost-effective, easy to use, and customizable when you buy them in bulk. According to Melissa, bubbles have the versatility of being utilized during the day, or at night if you select the kind that glows in the dark.
Analogous to walking through an aisle of twinkling handheld stars, the romantic aesthetic and glamor sparklers lend to group photos explain why they’re one of the most requested wedding exits. Before couples become starry-eyed with this option — as it does pose some danger — Melissa suggests discussing your vision with your coordinator beforehand to ensure your guests are properly instructed on the sparklers’ disposal after the event. If you’re looking for a send-off that retains the same high energy without the risk, Melissa proposes glow sticks as an alternative.

Packaging the mystical phenomenon of the rainbow, colored smoke bombs paint the sky with vivid puffy clouds, creating a magical backdrop for a wedding recessional. With a wide variety of colors, couples can tailor the send-off to match their color palette, with softer hues to create a dreamy ambiance or vibrant colors to kick off the party.
While Melissa hasn’t witnessed any incidents personally, couples should be aware that some color smoke bombs could potentially stain clothing, which may not appeal to every bride who’s chosen the traditional white gown.
Easy to orchestrate from start to finish, the charmingly simple send-off of tossing flower petals isn’t exclusively fun for the flower girl. The vision of delicate petals floating on the ocean breeze adds an extra aromatic touch of romance to a ceremony send-off held outdoors. Unlike other send-offs that require approaching an additional vendor for supplies, real petals can conveniently be acquired from the florist, which reduces some of the stressors of planning. Another plus is that live petals are naturally biodegradable, removing the headache of cleanup.
A tradition that originated in New Orleans weddings is increasing in popularity outside of the region. Transforming a couple’s wedding exit into an elaborate parade, the New Orleans second line has the newlyweds, followed closely by a brass band, lead a procession of their dancing guests to the reception area. One of Melissa’s personal favorites, this wedding exit creates a spirited, palpable atmosphere that persists throughout the entire event. “Everyone literally danced until the final minute of the night,” said Melissa.
While the sparkler send-off is exclusive to select guests, the second-line parade is an exit for everyone, in keeping with the New Orleans tradition that any passersby can join in on the fun.
